International Choral Conducting Summer School

41st International Choral Conducting Summer School

The 41st International Choral Conducting Summer School will now take place from the 8th - 14th August 2021.

We are incredibly disappointed not to deliver our International Choral Conducting Summer School this summer, however, our priority is the health and wellbeing of all involved and we look forward to continuing the course in August 2021.
“We are all disappointed that the Summer School cannot go ahead in 2020, but we very much look forward to returning with renewed energy in 2021 for a joyful and challenging week of music-making.” said newly appointed Artistic Director Orla Flanagan.

Sing Ireland presents its 41st International Choral Conducting Summer School for conductors, teachers, music students, choral singers and musicians. The only one of its kind in Ireland, this seven-day intensive course offers a wealth of expertise from international tutors, all of whom are active conductors and experienced teachers of conducting. With courses designed to meet the needs and abilities of every student — from beginners to experienced and established conductors — participants at all levels will develop and refine their core conducting skills, with more advanced classes focusing on areas such as rehearsal technique, interpretation, vocal technique, style, and pronunciation of languages.

A special invitation is also issued to choral singers who would like to train their voices further and simply enjoy seven days of singing a wide range of excellent choral music. This course also welcomes those who simply wish to observe.

In 2020, Orla Flanagan was appointed Artistic Director. Orla Flanagan’s vast choral conducting experience includes professional ensembles Milltown Chamber Choir, EnsemBéal and the National Chamber Choir of Ireland alongside her longstanding position as conductor of Mornington Singers. Currently Assistant Professor of Music at Trinity College, Dublin, Orla holds an Advanced Diploma from the Kodály Institute, Hungary and a Doctorate of Music in Performance from the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Orla regularly delivers choral workshops and adjudicates at festivals in Ireland and internationally.

Based in the beautiful surroundings of the University of Limerick, this year’s summer school will provide the usual intensive instruction in choral conducting given by dynamic and inspirational tutors. A range of workshops will cover essential and stimulating topics; there will be daily warm-ups and choir sessions and an evening of masterclasses - all ensuring a varied, vibrant and valuable course to be enjoyed by all.

The International Choral Conducting Summer School is an approved summer course for primary teachers by the Department of Education and Skills Teacher Education Section.
