Choral and Organ Scholarships at St Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny

We invite expressions of interest for our 2024/2025 choral and organ scholarships, valued at €1,250. The scholarships run for one academic year (September 2024 until the end of June 2025). The scholars will sing with, conduct and play the organ for our cathedral choir under the guidance of the Cathedral Director of Music.

Who are the scholarships for?

  • Anybody in 3rd level or 2nd level education (Transition Year and above)
  • Those with an interest in choral singing and/or playing the pipe organ
  • Those considering a career in music who are looking for experience and an impressive CV boost

What are the requirements?

  • For singers:
    • a keen interest in music and in singing
    • good sight-reading skills, or willingness to develop these skills
    • choral singing experience, or willingness to gain such experience
    • ability to commit to the schedule (see below)
  • For organists:
    • a keen interest in music and in organ music
    • good keyboard skills (if new to the organ, usually Grade 5 piano will have been attained)
    • participation in organ lessons, provided by the Director of Music, with the view to sitting grade/diploma exams
    • ability to commit to the schedule (see below)

Organ scholars will have access to the cathedral’s pipe organ for practice.

For all applicants who show an interest, there will also be the opportunity to conduct the choir.


Currently, the choir meets once a week on a Sunday and on the last Friday of the month. The current schedule is:

Last Friday of the month

There is a rehearsal from 1900 – 2030 on the last Friday of each month in The Library.


1000 – 1115 Rehearsal for morning service

1130 – 1230 Morning service

1230 – 1300 LUNCH

1300 – 1400 Rehearsal for following week

1400 – 1500 Rehearsal for evensong

1500 – 1545 Evensong

While attendance at 100% of choir activities would be desirable, it is understandable that absences may need to be taken occasionally.
