World Youth Choir

Session Dates 30th July - 20th August 2020 | Sing Ireland Auditions 7th December 2019

World Youth Choir is looking for young, talented, experienced singers from all over the world, interested in improving their skills of choral singing while touring Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Italy in summer 2020.

In the Summer of 2020, the World Youth Choir will have a special session in the frame of the festivities of the Beethoven Anniversary Year, joining the National Youth Orchestra of Germany (Bundesjugendorchester) for a programme with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and a commission work by Tan Dun called Nine.

Session dates: July 30th (day of arrival) to August 20th (day of departure), 2020

Location: Rehearsal session in Bonn, Germany, followed by a tour with concerts in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Italy

First concert: August 8th Beethoven 2020 Gala concert with the first performance of Tan Dun’s Nine

Artistic Team: Tan Dun (USA), composer of the commissioned work (will conduct the first concerts including the Gala concert in Bonn), Jörn Hinnerk Andresen (DE, conductor), and World Youth Choir Alumni as soloists

They are looking for singers who:

  • are passionate and experienced high level choral singers or soloists
  • are interested in improving their skills in choral singing
  • are between 17 and 26 years old (on 1st July 2020).
  • have basic or professional music education
  • are ready to improve their singing and social skills
  • are ready to meet new friends from all over the world
  • are ready to accept diversity of world cultures
  • are eager to learn in a multicultural environment
  • are ready to spend 3-4 weeks month with extraordinary like-minded choristers

Does it fit you? In that case, the World Youth Choir is the place to be and sing!

Why should you join? Beyond the project itself, the World Youth Choir is a way to network with choral youth in the world. Selected singers/session participants are considered cultural “ambassadors” of their country. In return they make friends with young people from all over the world, learn of new/different singing techniques, improve interpretation as well as stage performance capacity while singing choral music of various styles, time periods and the many genres of each continent, learn about other cultures and bring back home choral music from different world countries.

During your audition, you will be recorded and asked to perform (in the following order):

a) A range test: one scale sung forte a cappella on an open vowel presenting the entire voice-range, not exceeding 1'20'' in total

b) Sight-reading: Applicants should record a melody as a piece of sight reading. Use up to 10 minutes to look the exercise through (not using a piano, except for the introduction pitch/cadenza) and analyse all tonal and theory components. Then record at first attempt in front of the jury or a supervisor.

c) Prepared score: For the 2020 World Youth Choir auditions the prepared score is a choral excerpt from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Click here to download the audition score.

d) Aria of choice: Singers must prepare and sing an aria of their choice, to be performed at their audition and submitted with their application.
