3 young Irish singers selected for World Youth Choir 2019

We are delighted to announce three Irish singers have been selected to be part of the World Youth Choir under conductor Josep Vila i Casañas: Chloe Kiely (Soprano from Waterford), Ciaran Fennelly (Tenor from Kilkenny) and Eilis Dexter (Mezzo Soprano from Dublin).

The international jury meeting was hosted at the Drac Occitanie building in Toulouse, France, between the 11th and 14th of March. The jury members, representative of the three patron organisations (IFCM, ECA-EC and JMI), together with the conductor of the session, selected the best singers from 250 candidates. After many hours of listening to the numerous recordings and evaluating the applicants, the international jury finally chose 56 singers from 27 countries to be part of the World Youth Choir 2019 summer session in France and Portugal.

Eilis is a student in Trinity College Dublin studying for her BA in Music and currently sings with the Mornington Singers, regularly is a deputy for Christchurch Cathedral Choir, St Patrick's Cathedral Choir and St Ann's Church Choir. She was a member of TCD Chapel Choir, TCD Singers, Ceiliúradh Choir and Goethe Institut Choir. Eilis currently studies Voice with Virginia Kerr.

Ciaran is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin where he received his BA in Music in 2018 and is currently a Choral Clerk for St Bartholomew’s Church in Ballsbridge, Dublin and sings with the Mornington Singers since 2015. He was a senior choral scholar with St. Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny, a member of the Campanile Consort and choral scholar for the Trinity College Chapel choir. Ciaran is studying vocal studies with Aisling Kenny.

Chloe is a recent graduate of the CIT Cork School of Music, having studied singing with Robert Craig. She began singing in the WIT Youth Choir with Niall Crowley, and has since sang with Irish Youth Choir/Chamber Choir, Madrigal ‘75, and the Choir of Christchurch Cathedral. Chloe was a member of the 2018 World Youth Choir Session, touring Inner Mongolia and Beijing.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the World Youth Choir (WYC), France will host the 2019 WYC Summer Sessionin the southern region of Occitanie, from mid-July to early August.

While the Occitanie region is recognised for its own celebrated musical traditions with numerous prestigious festivals, it also offers a rich culture of gastronomy, diversified natural landscape, and captivating history. This stimulating and inspiring setting will enable the 2019 WYC singers to explore and experience French culture as they rehearse and make music together.

The ten days of rehearsals will take place in Millau or Saint Affrique. The concert tour will take the 2019 WYC to the International Festival of Sacred Music/World Music at Sylvanes Abbey, Lisbon (Portugal) and will end at the Choralies festival in Vaison-la-Romaine.
